but if you could just see the beauty
What this is: As the subject line states, this is a comprehensive master list of all the Jarean work I've been able to find anywhere. If you know of any other fic, art, vids, meta, anything out there about this pairing, by you or by someone else, please link me to it so I can add it. I will keep updating this post as I find new stuff. This is not a list of all the SPN/RPF crossovers out there, only the Jared/Dean ones. Nor is it a recs list per se, since I add everything I find regardless of how much I personally like it or think it is well-written.

Disclaimercakes: Supernatural is created by Eric Kripke and owned by The CW and its parent company Time Warner AOL, and everyone else on the internet is just borrowing it and hopefully not making any money thereby. These are works of fiction and are not meant to be taken as actual statements about one Jared Padalecki, actor, who quite obviously has never done any of the things featured here and who in no way should be assumed to have the personality traits attributed to the Jared characters in these stories. The same goes for any other character mentioned herein who is "based on" a real person.

Okay, so I have this list in my head of the times when I typically hate men-in-general.

1. When I'm having my period (because they don't have to suffer through that)
2. When I'm shopping for bras or bathing suits (because they don't have to suffer through that)
3. When they're sexually harassing me on the street or recently when I've been reading all this stuff about rape culture (because they are jerktards and HOW DARE THEY)

I went into DC to see the fireworks on the Mall on the 4th. And of course, as during any huge huge crowded event on the Mall, at one point I needed to use the bathroom. And I realized there is actually a fourth item on my list.

4. When I'm in a huge line for the women's room and men traipse on into their restroom without any wait

I can count on the fingers of one hand the times when a women's line has been shorter than a men's line, and most of those times were at gay events with mostly male crowds.

Anyhow, it was after the museums closed, and I didn't want to use the portapotties, but the fireworks weren't starting for another hour so I wandered up a few blocks to a Starbucks. There were about three people in line at the counter for coffee etc and maybe ten women queued up for the bathroom, so I joined the line. After a minute this guy shows up and starts to head in, asking if the men's room is back there too, and the woman at the front of the line says, "we're using both." (These were the single-person kind of bathrooms.) Pretty much every woman in line shook her head at him and multiple people said some variation on, "you don't get to cut in line just because you're a man." (That's basically what I said, another woman said, "because you have a penis," you know, stuff like that.) He got really huffy and annoyed, and went to get a coffee, and as he was walking out he said all meanly almost right in my face, "fine, enjoy using the bathroom."

Over the course of the half hour I spent waiting, the line built up to more than 25 people. Every guy who came in did pretty much the same thing: they started to walk past all the women standing in line, and got sent back to the back of the queue. And their faces! They were all completely and utterly shocked, annoyed, upset, horrified, when they were told no. They didn't expect to have to wait. And they certainly did not expect to have a group of women stand so firm against them and refuse to give them their special male stuff.

Sure, because 20 women are going to stand in line for half an hour to use one bathroom, leaving the other empty and ready for you to waltz directly on in.

Yeah, whatEVER.

At one point a female employee walking past on her way to the breakroom said, "guys, you don't have to wait in line, that line is for the women's bathroom." And when the women said, we're using them both, she was a little surprised but went, "okay," and left. Then a bit later the man behind the counter started announcing, "guys, you don't have to wait in line with the women, that's the line for the women's room," he was also told, no, we're using them both, and he protested a few times but no woman in the queue was going to budge. The one in front of me even said, "yeah, clearly we're not living in a post-feminist world."

I mean, waiting in line for that long sucks, but it's what you EXPECT when you go to a huge crowded event on the Mall. And with single-person bathrooms like that, I don't see why they are gender-labeled anyway. Just have two unisex single-person bathrooms and cut the BS out at the root.

So to all the men who had to omgnoes wait behind women, I say to you, STFU and deal with it.

And to all the women who held so firm in solidarity in that Starbucks on Saturday evening, I am very proud of you. I was glad to see so many of us united against men cutting in line, and it felt good to be at one with the crowd.

No, not the solstice (though that, too), the elections for user representative on the LJ Advisory Board. You get to contribute your vote at [info]lj_election_en or [info]lj_election_ru. VAST amounts of choice this year: Cyrillic users have two candidates and the rest of us have five. I had a hard time even finding three people I wanted to vote for. :/ I personally support [info]vichan for this position.

(I am also glad I have Dreamwidth to go to when I see what LJ is doing over at [info]lj_advisory.)

I have a billion (read: more like 6 or so) DW invite codes to give away.

DW, I have to say, is awesome. It has the kind of feel LJ used to have, great management, and is technically a much better site. (Or. It's still in beta, some things are not there yet, but when it rolls out for real in a few months it WILL BE technically a much much better site than LJ.)

1. The Washington Post had an article this morning about the backlog in the copyright office (apparently their new faster system for registering stuff is actually slower) and it was incredibly frustrating, talking about how people were "waiting sixteen months to get their copyrights" and saying things like "you don't need a copyright to publish or perform a work, but registering it provides legal protection and is the only way to keep people from copying your stuff" and I was yelling back like "These people already have copyrights! They aren't waiting to GET them at all!" Argh, fail, Post, fail.

2. There are more and more Big Bangs springing up, and somehow the average wordcount they require has shrunk from the 50,000 it originally was to 15,000 for almost all of the new ones. Since when is 15,000 words a huge long story?

3. Bandom/CW crossover in real life: Leighton Meester doing vocals on Cobra Starship's new single.

4. I was watching Angel the other day and suddenly there was surprise!JDM, playing some guy whose boyfriend had been killed by vampires.

5. I've also been watching reruns of various CSIs and have seen surprise!Lucas Luthor, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Megalyn Echikunwoke, a Ghostfacer, Brendan Fehr, Adrianne Palicki, and Sandra McCoy.

6. I went out last night to watch Star Trek again and then ended up making it a double feature with Wolverine. Because I'm able to do that kind of thing now. Also they gave me a free popcorn. Wolverine was indeed fairly meh: it wasn't a very well-structured story and I didn't think it added very much to the movieverse overall. Mainly it just made me think a) movie-Gambit/movie-Rogue would indeed be hot (hey, they are a classic, I liked them together when I was little (though the other movies have made me appreciate the Rogue/Bobby/John of course)) and b) Lynn Collins taking Taylor Kitsch home to Steven Strait for a little reunion and by "reunion" we mean "hot threeway sex." Because you guys, I learned a few weeks ago that Steven Strait GOT MARRIED last year at AGE 22 (to a woman who is 29, I'm just saying). And she was in the Wolverine movie so of course it was like "hey, honey, someone in my movie is someone you've worked with before." "Oh reeeaaaaallly." And I feel very dirty for thinking this, yes I do, but still. Somehow the pure innocence of Sky High was washed out by the obvious slashiness of The Covenant here.

7. Speaking of feeling dirty, if you had asked me a week ago whether I'd ever be reading porn about Captain Kirk enjoying being dominated and roughed up and choked during sex, I would have said a) totally OOC and b) I don't read fic about those people, oh god my childhood! Fandom, what have you done to my brain, apparently the new Enterprise is a big orgy where everyone is part of a happy team with benefits and especially Kirk, Spock, and Uhura have lots of sex all together. Team with benefits, I just. (YouTube is not cooperating and finding kissing clips for me.)

8. Apparently there is something wrong with me on the internets.

9. Am also trying to hash out a concept for a mainstream sci-fi action blockbuster with a majority female, majority of color cast and a happy queer romance subplot. Because the day I go watch a blockbuster with surprise!homoerotic plotline will be a happy day, and no one else seems to be moving faster on it. Plus, have gone back to working on Gilgamesh, though that has fewer women and no overt gay sex. It does have a more complete plot at the moment, though (so far I am stealing viral aliens).

10. This entry is apparently all about threesomes.

Anyone who's been considering signing up for [info]sv_remix and hasn't done so yet, remember that sign-ups close on the 20th (although really this means they are open until I get up and get online on the 21st (I'm in USA east coast time)). You can sign up just to offer your work to be remixed (meaning no new effort for you), or just to do a remix (meaning you can join even if you've never done anything in Smallville fandom before), or to do both. So far all the sign-ups have been in the LiveJournal comm, but it's also open on Dreamwidth and InsaneJournal.

1. Still have not seen Wolverine or the new Star Trek. Anyone wanna go with me next week or should I just do it myself? (I am all booked up this week (except Wednesday), but totally free next week - classes will be over, TV show will be over, no plans...) Have been re-reading a bunch of the ST novels we own, and have realized that I actually probably got more of my knowledge of TOS from the novels than the episodes as a kid... which is a little like knowing fic more than canon, in a way. (Especially since so many of the novels are by fic writers, ha ha ha!)

2. If Smallville is determined to stagger on for another season, they should get Michael Rosenbaum to come and direct a bunch of episodes. That would at least be something good for him.

3. Oh, Supernatural. Oh, Dean. Oh, Sam. The plot may be doing wtf but the emo is there.

4. I kinda want to discuss a few things about the season finale of Dollhouse with someone. Anyone up for it, or should I go search for comms and talk to strangers? (Also, it is odd watching Amy Acker in both that and S3 of Angel, all at once. All of Dollhouse is odd that way! It's like some crazy BTVS/ATS/Firefly crossover of doom! And of HOT. Also, I have watched that Eliza Dushku/Summer Glau Fox Friday clip on Hulu a bazillion times because HOT. Also, Sierra (Diechen... um... something...) is HOT.) (Angel S3 continues on apace. I am both very excited for the soon to arrive CONNORCONNORCONNORCONNOR and yet worried that I will somehow not like it this time around. As we all know, high expectations lead to disappointment.) (Also, re Dollhouse, I want to know if Jane Espenson has seen SKU, after that prince stuff.) (I think the main reason I'm watching Dollhouse is that Joss is FINALLY ADMITTING the problems and squickiness of mind-wipes after hurting me with them so much in BTVS/ATS where he didn't seem to get what he was doing.)

(Warning: Spoilers in comments.)

This may totally change! But here are my current plans for how to use journaling services.

I have accounts as ciaan at four sites: LiveJournal, InsaneJournal, JournalFen, and Dreamwidth. I mainly only use IJ and JF for reading and commenting on stuff that is only posted on those sites, and don't really make posts there myself. The sites I post to and use actively are/will be DW and LJ.

I will probably crosspost most content to both LJ and DW, but there may be things that, for various reasons, are only on one site or the other. I don't mind if you want to read me both places or if you want to be LJ-only or DW-only in your own site use (or IJ-only or JF-only). Feel free to add or remove me wherever to make it work best for you. Tell me where I should be reading you, though! Or I might go "huh, she hasn't updated all month..." because I am looking in the wrong place (especially if you changed your name when you went to another site).

(I still reserve the right to not be current or comprehensive on my friendspage reading... There's a lot of stuff I've been missing lately, and that will probably continue to be true. At the moment I am probably more likely to read more people on my DW list and probably to use tight reading filters on LJ (I think reading filters are not usable currently on DW?).)

I think I will probably try to post more things public at DW, so don't worry too much if I don't give you access there. I'm quite possibly going to try out subscribing to people without giving them access at first. It may take me a while to move my whole friendslist from LJ to DW and it may get rearranged some in the process. If I haven't added you at DW (yet) it doesn't necessarily mean I am totally abandoning you. On the other hand, when I meet new people at DW I'll probably add them there without also adding them at LJ.

I don't think I will be importing my LJ posts to DW. I've been on LJ for 7 years now, and the way I use it has changed multiple times, and DW is a new site, I don't need to retcon my presence here. I want a bit less clutter, a bit of a new start, to shake off the dust. Possibly this should also be an impetus for me to update my website so my fic is more accessible, and put some more of it up on other archives (I am totally antsy to get an OTW AO3 account, I really ought to be posting to the good ol' SSA, and I actually signed up for ff.n to put Sky High fic on (gah do I have weird mixed feelings about that)). Or, you know, maybe I should actually start using delicious.

This is the tentative idea I have for how to do this! Please comment with questions, suggestions, problems, anything, so that I can work out a system that is good for as many people as possible.

You may or may not have participated in a remix before, or even heard of one, but I want to do a Smallville fandom specific version. There are going to be a lot fewer limits than [info]remix_redux has, however.

This is open to anyone in Smallville fandom. All genres, characters, pairings, themes, and media are accepted. Fic, art, comics, manips, icons, vids, meta, filk songs, fanmixes, we want it all.

"Remix" is being defined very broadly here. If you can collapse a 100,000-word epic fic into a 6-word ficlet that makes everyone marvel at how well you did it, or vice versa, go for it. If you make a sequel, do the same plot with a different pairing, tell it from the POV of some sentient peanuts, make a vid of a fic, write a fic based on an icon set or a fanmix, draw art for a vid, make a fanmix for a comic, write fic based on a meta essay, throw in some crossover characters, combine three things into one, write meta about a vid, take photos of peanuts acting out a vid, or "merely" rewrite a fic scene from a different character's POV, whatever, go for it. Just get an idea from your assignment's works, have fun, and try to push your limits! And don't die of peanut allergies.

There will be two levels of sign-up: to remix or to be remixed. You can sign up for one or the other or both.

The requirement for signing up to remix is really just a desire to create SV fanworks.

The requirement to sign up to be remixed is that you must have, publicly posted and easily accessible, at least four (4) Smallville fanworks. Things that count as fanworks: fic, vids, meta essays, fanmixes, icon sets, manips, comics, drawings, other art, etc. Things that do not count as fanworks: episode reviews/reactions/recaps, picspams/screencaps, icons you post with, rec lists, DVD commentaries on things other people created, etc. Co-created works can only be used if both/all creators sign up to be remixed. WIPs are also off-limits.

Length: There is no maximum size. The minimum size is that something must exist.

Process: Sign up using the standard form. If you are remixing, you will be assigned one or two people to work from. Take a look over their works, decide what you want to do, and go for it. There are pretty much no limits on the content of what you create in terms of subject matter (however, don't use items from your assignment's personal life, as posted in their journal, within your remix).

If you are being remixed, please remember that it's not about you. Just as fans come up with all kinds of ideas based on canon, so the remixer can come up with all kinds of ideas based on your work. Inspired by your work. But it's not a reflection of you, it's a reflection of the remixer. There are no guarantees. You may hate what they make. You may love it. There may not actually be a remix of anything by you, if people drop out or something.

Sign-up form:
Name:
Email:
Are you remixing (yes/no)?
Can your works be remixed (yes/no)?
Link to your fanworks (website, LJ tag or memory category, etc):
What you normally make (medium, genre, pairing/characters, era, ratings, etc):
What you are interested in remixing (medium, genre, pairing/characters, era, ratings, etc):
What you really don't want to remix (medium, genre, pairing/characters, era, ratings, etc):

Example sign-up:
Name: ciaan
Email: ciaan at nemurokinenkan dot net
Are you remixing (yes/no)? yes
Can your works be remixed (yes/no)? yes
Link to your fanworks (website, LJ tag or memory category, etc): LJ tag and website
What you normally make (medium, genre, pairing/characters, era, ratings, etc): Fic, some meta, a few icons/manips, mainly Clex
What you are interested in remixing (medium, genre, pairing/characters, era, ratings, etc): I might want to do fic based on non-fic sources. I like Clex and Lex-centric things.
What you really don't want to remix (medium, genre, pairing/characters, era, ratings, etc): I only follow seasons 1-3 and haven't seen the recent seasons, so I can't work with those characters or plots. I avoid Lexana and mpreg.

Dates:
Sign-ups: May 1 through May 20
Assignments go out: by June 5
Posting: August 1 through August 20
(EDIT: Or actually, posting could start immediately and would be open until maybe August 31 or September 15.)

If you can't post by the final date, but are in progress on something, please ask your assignment whether you can keep working on it and post it later. There are no penalties at all for not getting something posted within the time span, but I would appreciate being notified.

I will create a community to organize everything in. (EDIT: Have created [info]sv_remix at LJ and IJ, will be making it at DW once I am able to.)

So! Any suggestions?

...am I having the crazy desire to organize a Smallville remix challengefestthing? Would anyone actually participate in that? What would be a good time to have one, if so, that wouldn't conflict with the SV Big Bang etc? Am I insane?

EDIT: I would want to make this as accessible as possible, so I would actually really like to make it open to every single medium - fic, vids, manips, icons, drawings, comics, filk songs, fanmixes, meta, whatever. So that you might end up doing a vid remixing a fic, or a comic remixing a vid, or a fic remixing an icon set, or....

Yay! Me and Becka and Agnes and Nony and Emily and Lucy and someone named Carla (or Clara?) went to see Fired Up yesterday and we all really liked it! It was fun and cute and funny and happy and adorable and amazing! So if you are looking for a very enjoyable hour and a half of cheerleading, sex, romance, and boys becoming better by learning the moral lesson that girls are real people too, then go see this movie! Plus bonus gay boys and girls! We laughed, we squeed, we smiled, we thought it was hot and hilarious! I wanna watch it again!

I've been meaning to rec these for ages, but I am slow at these things.

Filthy Mind by [info]rivkat - Sam/Dean, Dean/others. This is non-con. This is like, the epitome of and meta on what non-con fic is about and all the ways in which it is horrible and why people find it hot. The difference between what you do in your mind and what you do in the world. If you're into non-con you should definitely read this and if you've ever wondered why people are into non-con, right here is your answer. This takes everything as far as it can go and then a little further, and it is hot and terrifying and very thinky.

Sympathy For The Devil by [info]lyrstzha - Supernatural/Babylon 5 crossover. Gen. I originally clicked on this link because I thought such a crossover would never work. But it does. It so does. This is about love and sacrifice and it is gorgeous and heartrending and fits everything together so perfectly, and leaves so much up to implication. Genius.

This post is partially in honor of [info]halfamoon and [info]14valentines and such stuff.

I'm not saying Supernatural is perfect, because it has its flaws. Right now I am here to talk about the good stuff.

For me, the show is about Sam and Dean and everyone else is secondary. But one of the things I like about it is that the secondary characters are so often awesome for their fifteen minutes or fifteen seconds of fame. They may be a flash in the pan screentime-wise, but they come across as cool people who have their own angles and internal stories, rather than just cardboard props. And many of these awesome secondary characters are female.

SPN is a horror show and a tragedy, so quite frequently the characters suffer awful fates or commit awful deeds. But even sad dead people and bad people and evil inhuman monsters can be interesting characters.

These women are a mixed bag: some are sexy, some are matronly, some are children; some are heroes, some are nasties. Some can/should not really be ascribed human genders, but have been portrayed by female actors or called by female pronouns.

A horror show about two heroes could very easily have lots of the typical damsels in distress who cower in corners and scream, waiting for a man to fix things. Instead we get reams of women who are competent, smart, capable, talented, strong, and brave. They help themselves, they help other people, they go after what they want.

And what's more, the women Sam and Dean and John are most attracted to tend to be especially competent, smart, and active. I was, earlier, working on a post about What Winchesters Want In Women on that theme, but instead I'm broadening it to this (and taking out the part about hair color, ha ha).

I don't know what you see, but that's what I see.

So here goes, starting with two of my faves and continuing in mostly but not totally chronological order, a list of cool female characters who have been on SPN.

There are enough to cut the post. )

Feel free to comment and go on at length about how awesome these characters are, or add in others I left off. Also give love to the women who bring us the show as writers, actors, and crew.

Please don't, though, do any bashing, of characters or show makers or storylines ("she was a sucky character," "I hate the episodes she writes," "she was awesome, but then they did X to her because they are misogynistic bastards," etc. ("I wish they'd bring back..." and "I want to know more about..." are fine)).

This post is for being happy about these awesome characters and the fact that the show provided them.
