This Saturday, May 5, is Free Comic Book Day. Everyone should attend and get some comics for me, since I have to miss it and two different people's birthday parties to do filming for the 48 Hour Film Project (yay!). Which means that info about our screening will be coming up shortly.

Also this month I've been reccing Smallville fic in [info]crack_van. SV used to be a regular fandom over there but was retired in 2009, so I signed up to do it as a small fandom. No one has done that in the intervening period, and thus I think other people should go do it in future so we continue to have SV recs there.

Also remember when I talked about being into the idea of Lex/Kon? Well, I FOUND SOME. (Actually [info]sansets found it for me because she is cool like that.) Someone else wrote it (!!!) and I read it and really liked it.

I really ought to update on my life and explain why I haven't been around, but this week I'm very busy prepping for the 48HFP and my German final exam. (Hint: Ich habe kein Zeit, weil ich Deutsch lerne. Ich lerne gar nicht gern Deutsch, weil es mich kein Zeit haben macht. Et l'Allemand est plus dificile que le Français. Also I realize there are a load of errors have I mentioned that I am not getting the hang of this whole German thing argggghhhhhh leave me comments in German so I can practice augh.)

My parents are taking off again for a long trip, which means I'm going to be doing another round of house- and cat-sitting for them. And since [info]sansets is also moving out, [info]kinetikatrue and [info]coyotegestalt are looking for two new housemates to move in at the beginning of July. It's a nice big house right in Takoma Park. Contact me or them for details if you are interested.

This has been going on for a few months now and still most people don't seem to know about it.

A while back LiveJournal changed all communities to a new moderation setting: "Entries including links to whitelisted domains will be automatically posted. Entries containing links that have not been added to the whitelist will still require manual moderation. To add links to your whitelist, click below."

This means any time you post to a community and include a link to somewhere other than LJ your post is put into the moderation queue. Unless the site you're linking to is on the whitelist. I'm not sure what is on the whitelist, but the AO3 is definitely not.

And since the mods of comms weren't informed that their comms were suddenly being moderated, most of them aren't checking the moderation queues.

So if you've tried to post to a comm and wondered why it was suddenly moderated, and then your post never actually went through, that's why.

If you mod any comms on LJ, you can got to the settings page and put moderation back to the way you want it. Please please everyone check your comm settings and make sure they are correct.

Happy 2012 everyone! I actually wrote a lot of fic, comparatively, in December, and fulfilled multiple writing requirements I had signed up for. I wrote three fics for [info]yuletide, that's three count 'em 3, the first time I've ever written more than one fic for Yuletide. And I did a [info]kink_bingo mini-challenge. And I wrote something for [info]clexmas. And we had Yuletide write-ins which were really fun and helpful!

Now I've signed up for [info]recast_bigbang, which still needs more artists to sign up, so artists! Who want to do art for a recast/fusion/crossover Big Bang! You should sign up! I'm going to write a fic with the X-Men: First Class characters translated onto Darkover. You're looking at me like I'm crazy, but it actually works perfectly. The Ages of Chaos, when many new forms of laran were developing, pre-Compact, chieri, and two words: Charles Alton. Also, bredu and breda are still apparently pretty much the most romantic terms I can think of.

Um. Anyhow. Back to Yuletide.

Stories for me

Postcards by Leyenn - Bring It On, Torrance/Isis, worksafe, 1,708 words. I have been wanting this pairing for ages and not been able to find any of it, and this is a beautiful little story that gets them together nicely!

Reemergence by Taelle - Miss Pym Disposes by Josephine Tey, Mary Innes and Beau Nash, worksafe, 4,514 words. Technically this was written for [info]kinetikatrue, but whatever, it was basically one of my other requests. So so so good and true as a sequel to the novel, I cried, it is gorgeous.

Stories by me

Mayhem At The Mall - Sky High, Layla, Magenta, Warren, gen. A Christmas shopping trip takes a slight turn for the worse. 2,177 words.

Reunion - Sky High, Layla/Warren, worksafe. A Homecoming dance, five years after graduating from high school. 766 words.

Experiments In Intelligence - Octopus Steals My Video Camera And Swims Off With It While It's Recording, gen. Three Quick Flickers And All Arms Waving is young, but she is not reckless, nor is she a coward, either. She is an observer of humans. She experiments with them because she wants to solve the ancient, controversial question of whether the humans are intelligent. 1,017 words. (This story has been amazingly popular, considering that if I had posted it at any other time of the year I would have been hard-pressed to get even three readers. Instead it's in the top 40 Yuletide fics in terms of hits and has an unbelievable over 1/5, almost 1/4, of those hits translating to actual positive feedback. I am happily boggled.)

Tomorrow morning I fly off to Puerto Rico, see you when I get back!

Notes: This is an AU of the djinn wishverse from episode 2.20, What Is And What Should Never Be. I call it the happyverse which of course means I had a creepy meta explanation for it when I created it. This is one of those fics I wrote years and years ago, got beta comments on from [info]buffyspazz and B, and then never finished revising or posted. Hi, Yulegoat! I hope you have an exciting journey in writing these next few weeks.

General points: Mostly what I'm looking for from Yuletide is fic that makes me happy. So please to lean toward ending things at a good point and away from angst, character death, gory violence and torture, rape/non-con/dub-con, break-ups, infidelity, amnesia, descriptions of pregnancy, teacher/student relationships, or first person POV. I don't mind whatever rating you do with my pairings, from G to NC-17, but I'm not looking for anything where the whole fic is sex and only sex. Plot is great, or just characters talking and relating is great.

And now for more about what I like in my specific fandoms. Josephine Tey books, Bring It On, actor RPF, and fantastical time-traveling balloon rides. )

I'm making a mix for [info]bigbang_mixup, which is a Big Bang with a 10,000 word minimum for fic, any fandom or original writing. The twist is, the music mixes come first, and the authors pick a mix to use to write fic from. Author claiming of mixes opens November 5, and author sign-ups end November 10. Then there is also a round for artists to make art based on the fics.

So I am encouraging people to sign up to be authors and artists! I would love it if some great stuff developed from the mix I am making.

So I ran a Google search on my name, as one does, and one of the results that was linked to was a page showing that I, under my full real legal name, am the owner of nemurokinenkan.net.

Now, you've always been able to go to WhoIs and look up nemurokinenkan.net and see that it is owned by me, and I don't mind that. I'm not actually all that worried about people being able to find out that ciaan is me.

What I don't want, though, is people looking up me under my real name and finding ciaan. And I'm pretty sure that domain registrations listed by the person's name didn't show up in such searches any other time I've checked.

So just a PSA for anyone who has fannish or otherwise private or pseudonymous domain registrations, but under a legal name (so you can pay for it and all), these listings may be showing up when someone runs a search for your name.

So my birthday weekend consisted of less fun and productivity than I had wanted and instead way more of being sick and sitting around feeling grumpy and icky. :/

DC Comics Nielsen Survey - If you are a current or former or possible reader of DC Comics, especially if you fall outside their target 18- to 35-year-old straight white male audience, tell 'em what you really think.

And, we all know I like HGTV, right? The Urban Oasis Sweepstakes ends soon.

They also have a new show called House Hunters On Vacation, where the premise is, they take a family to a dream vacation location, show them three fancy houses, and then the family gets to pick which one to stay in for a week while HGTV pays for it. In the episodes so far it seems they are making a point to pick families who can't pay for vacations on their own. So, if you haven't been able to afford a get-away and you want/need one, maybe HGTV will give you a free and lavish one. It can't hurt to apply.

I started reading it last week and I am really liking it so far! I like the writing, the art, the characters, the little meta jokes, the demographics, the premise, the interrelationships, pretty much everything. I also like that it is clearly set in the Marvel universe but is fairly standalone, as I do not know much about the Marvel universe yet (indeed it feels more like an indie comic that is commenting on the superhero genre than like an actual superhero comic, I mean it feels like a normal real comic to me, not like all this wtf why am I reading superhero stuff I've been feeling (yes, indie comics are normal real comics and superhero comics are a weird outlier to me, a lot of the stuff I'm liking about Runaways (like the kids looking like their parents and the girls having varied body types) I would take for granted in a normal indie comic, and yet I am surprised and impressed by it being the case in something from The Big 2 (holy shit I really have had my standards lowered by reading this stuff for a year, haven't I? *facepalm* (fuck you Dan "we only hire the best" DiDio)))).

I bought the first TPB last week on Thursday evening (because I am actually going to the comic store weekly to pick up some of the new DCnU #1s this month, which is not really the best life choice). I finished it Friday on the bus on my way home from work, and then was really sad that I had to wait a whole week to read more. Which, if you have any idea how dead my sense of suspense is, says a lot. I frequently just stop reading things if I'm interrupted for a while in the middle of them, because my need to know "what happens next" has been mostly killed. Then on Wednesday I went back to the comic store, and this time I bought two TPBs, so that I would have more to read.

So I finished another TPB last night and went to start the next one, and that was when I discovered that I had not bought TPB #2 and TPB #3, as I thought, because apparently in the 8 years the comic has been running it's been renumbered TWICE and is on volume 3 now. Dear Marvel: I really appreciate that the back of the TPB says which issue numbers it collects but it would be super nice if you would indicate that there have been multiple volumes, so that I know (for example) which issue #11 I'm getting! Cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth. The upshot of which is, I had to set aside the other book I bought and now I need to wait a week AGAIN to read more.

Apparently the first volume, 18 issues of it, is all written by Brian K. Vaughan, who I haven't read anything by before, to the best of my recollection, but I am liking his stuff here. And then it is written by some other people later, the other TPB I bought is by a woman I am unfamiliar with, some of it is by Joss Whedon (I hear his run is maybe not as good?) and then some of it is by Terry Moore. I really loved Strangers In Paradise, so I am looking forward to seeing what Terry Moore does here and how he handles pre-established characters.

So, uh, no spoilers please, but I am totally on the bandwagon of the Runaways at the moment. Reading through the DCnU #1s is kinda feeling like a chore now, a lot of it I am just doing so I know for sure, but can it please be Wednesday already so I can get more Runaways?

Waaaaay back in the day I started answering the 20 Days Of Vids meme questions, and then didn't come anywhere near finishing them. I am now going to resume answering those! You can find my previous answers under the vidding tag.

Day 8 - A vid you had to watch multiple times to understand

I can't actually think of any vids that I didn't feel I got until I'd watched them multiple times (though there's always more to find every time you rewatch something), so instead I'm listing a vid that I've watched multiple times and still don't get.

Us by [info]lim (multifandom)

When this vid was first posted it was an instant and major hit. I watched it after seeing about a dozen recs in a row on my friendspage. All of them said this vid is so happy! and joyful! and full of squee! such a wonderful celebration of how fandom is awesome! and creative! and squee! And yes, I can understand the argument the vid is making. It's really well edited, with amazing effects, very pretty and very creative and very smart and all that. But dude, this vid feels so sad and claustrophobic and depressing to me.

Mostly it's the song, which I had never heard before I saw this vid. The singer's voice just seems pained and sad, and it's full of violins, which are always tragic. But it's also kinda the scratchy greyness of the visual effects. This vid just makes me feel like it's about a world where things suck really bad and no matter how hard you try to escape to somewhere better you just can't get out. And I'm willing to admit I'm in the wrong if 99% of people think it's a joyful celebration, but I still can't feel that. And I've tried. I've watched this vid multiple times. I've watched it with no sound to see if that made a difference. I've watched it at cons and discussed it with people. I've read analyses of it. I've read the vidder's own discussion of making the vid. Nothing changes it.

So yeah, joyful celebration, I still do not feel it, I do not hear it, I just don't get it. :(

Day 9 - A vid that makes you cry

Now after talking about a vid that makes me sad in a bad way, I'll talk about some that make me sad in a good way. Ones that make me cry and I love them for that.

Pet by [info]linzeestyle - Smallville, Lex, Lionel, Clark/Lex. Lionel is an evil, evil father. Augh, this vid has gone offline since last time I checked! Come to my house and I will play it for you! (\o/ Now it's back!)

Emmanuel by [info]sockkpuppett - Smallville, Lex, Clark/Lex. Lex worships Clark, and Clark fails to save him. And sadly this vid is not online anymore either! Come to my house and I will play it for you! But don't be like [info]sansets who kicked me in the shin for making her cry with these two vids AFTER I TOLD HER THEY WOULD MAKE HER CRY.

Big City Life by [info]halcyon_shift - Dark Angel, Max, ensemble. Summary of transgenic struggles. I'm not even sure why this one makes me cry every time, because it's hopeful too, it just always does.

And because so many of those were offline (whhhyyy???) a bonus.

Counting Bodies by [info]milly - Angel The Series, Angel, Connor, Darla, bit of Cordelia. This is actually to a different remix of the same song as Pet, and the two versions of the song as well as the different characters and editing styles contribute to two different feels for the vids despite the same themes. Which is really fascinating and there could be a great vid show of vids that use the same song differently.

I just went and put some more old stuff on the AO3.

No Place Else - parts 1 and 2 - A WIP that will hopefully be finished someday, maybe, hopefully, this is the story that started my Luthorverse, where Clark is raised as Lex's brother.

Chex ficlet - Chad the Goth (referenced in one scene in S4) has a crush on Lex. Since he was never on screen I may possibly imagine him as being played by Danny Smith.

Is it pathetic that I have WIPs that are 7 years old that I still want to finish? Or maybe a sign of bravery?

So your show is over now. Welcome to being a closed-canon fandom.

It's not the end of the world. I stopped watching Smallville 6 years ago and I'm still active in the fandom. I discuss it with people; I consume fanworks; I produce fanworks. I'm still in love with my OTP from the show and I think I always will be.

Please, please, please, don't all drop out of the fandom just because the show is over now. If I'm still around six years later, don't you think you can hold out for another year or two at least? I still have more I want to write. I still have more I want to read and watch.

For the sake of your favorite characters, pairings, and themes, and for my sake, please don't just give up on the fandom now that you don't have the show anymore. Closed-canon can be a great place to live. It means you know everything, and you can build your fanworks on a solid, unshifting foundation. You can poke through canon at a more leisurely pace while you work, not worrying about what might come barreling at you next week. You've got the whole house built, and now you can move in and decorate it.

Welcome to closed-canon world. I hope you join me and stay for a while.

That said, I did watch the finale, because, well, finale, and also because I'm on duty for [info]sv_ledger and I get to spend today reading reviews of it anyway, so better to have seen it myself.

Finale. )

So I'll be going back to my 3 seasons of SV and my fanworks, and I hope you will still be in the fandom with me.
